A MOTORCYCLIST who suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle accident over four years ago has been fitted with a 'bionic bottom'.
In
2005, Ged Galvin, 55, was left with horrific internal injuries when an
off-duty police officer pulled out in front of him in her car, while
the IT manager was riding his motorcycle.
Talented surgeons
from Royal London Hospital took a muscle from above Mr Galvin's knee,
wrapped it around his sphincter, and then attached electrodes to the
nerves, which are now operated by a palm-sized remote control that Ged
carries in his pocket.
Ged, from Barnsley, Yorkshire, now presses a remote-control to open his bowels and go to the toilet.
“It’s like a chubby little mobile phone,” he said. “You switch it on and off, just like switching on the TV.
“They
call me the man with the bionic bottom, but that doesn’t bother me. My
gratitude to the surgeons is endless because what they have done is a
miracle.”
The system sounds bizarre but the surgery has transformed Ged's life.
“The
operation changed my life and gave me back my pride and confidence.
Because of the remote control I can lead a normal life again.”
Amazing stuff. Bet Ged's got to be careful which remote he presses when channel hopping.
Wow... that sounds like an amazing procedure... I wonder if it would work for SCI paralysed people? Utterly life-transforming. Amazing what they can do these days.
Will have to tell my parents about this. Thanks for posting Jackie!
Well you have to laugh... It's the best way to cope with these things... My Dad shows off about having the most youthful looking bladder of all his mates after he had botox treatment on it to try and regain some control over it!
I hope the key lock is bloody good on it lost count how many calls I've had from folks mobiles whilest still in their pockets lol
All clever stuff though good on Jed being able to open bowels at will at a press of a button...........
Little phrase popped into my head and cannot now stop laughing lol "fastest finger 1st" lol
