Update: Fiat Yamaha have named Japanese test rider Wataru Yoshikawa as Valentino Rossi's stand-in while the world champion recovers from a broken leg. He will take Rossi's place from the Catalunya Grand Prix on 4 July for at least three races, when the team hope to have more idea about Rossi's health. Reigning MotoGP world champion Rossi suffered a broken leg in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello. The team chose not to replace him at the British and Dutch Grands Prix. Managing director Lin Jarvis said it was always the plan to promote Rossi's deputy from within. 606: DEBATE I feel it's an opportunity lost, why stick a racer coming to the end of his career on the bike? Smidsy1 "We have considered many different scenarios and candidate riders to fill the temporary vacant seat in the Fiat Yamaha team," he said. "We had always planned to use a rider from within the Yamaha Motor and Tech 3 family but for each rider we considered who is in active competition, their move to the Fiat Yamaha team would have created another problem for their own racing program or for the teams in which they are engaged. "Finally, after a great deal of consideration, we have selected Wataru Yoshikawa. "We provisionally plan for three races (Catalunya, Sachsenring and Laguna Seca) but we will adjust the plan accordingly when we know more about Valentino's expected date of return." Yoshikawa, 41, is a two-time Japanese Superbikes champion.
