Cut and pasted from an incoming press release:     As part of an ongoing initiative to advise motorcyclists about road safety issues, Merseyside Police and RideSafe BackSafe have heralded their visits to local ‘bike meets’ a great success. Thousands of motorcyclists in the area meet regularly at favourite cafes and pubs and police motorcyclists are now joining them to discuss road safety issues, share publicity campaigns and promote the benefits of rider training. Merseyside Roads Policing Officer, Mike Abram, explains;- " We recently joined motorcyclists at their Wednesday evening meet at the Scotch Piper Inn midway between Liverpool and Southport and we were well received. This has demonstrated to us that engaging with motorcyclists, rather than simply having a police presence at a social gathering, is very effective. Bikers now approach us in a relaxed atmosphere and show a great deal of interest in the knowledge and guidance we want to share ". Police and Road Safety Officers nationwide have acknowledged for some time that motorcyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users and more sophisticated campaigns and activities are being employed to help them. Merseyside Police and the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership now work much more closely with RideSafe BackSafe to focus on offering advice, information and voluntary training options to motorcyclists across the North West. Officer Abram continues;- " RideSafe BackSafe is now established as a part of the biking community and we are working well together as a team. Our approach focuses on prevention; I would rather offer the same sound advice a thousand times over, than have to deal with one collision involving a motorcyclist’s death or injury. ". The RideSafe BackSafe team will be visiting a bike meet at The Carousel, Southport on Sunday 8th November and intend to visit many similar events in 2010. Good to see a positive approach, rather than the bullying tactics that seem to be favoured over the Welsh border.
