Living a stones throw away Oulton Park i thought i would take a more active interest in Bike Racing other than putting the rider in the back of an ambulance.
Can anyone suggest a good site or book that explains the basics so to speak. In my experience, asking someone during the race tends to be met with something along the lines of sod off I'm watching the racing. If anyone fancies a run to Oulton park when there is a meet let me know.
Like i said i have given up asking people as you get a look like you have just farted. Frag suggested a book called motorcourse. went to the web site and didn't fancy shelling out 22 quid not knowing what the book had to offer. Plus I don't trust Crash publishing because i went to crash, net on her advise and got hip by 5 phishing pop-ups. So i will not me giving my card details to them.
Try the Haynes publishing site, as they're the oficial publishers to British Suoerbikes. I did have some of their up to date BSB titles, but they're gone to RC's charity event. Dare say she'll let you buy them off her!
Could try the ACU website www.acu.org.uk, as it's the governing body for all bike sport.
HTH...I'll be at the Piper on Wednesday if you fancy the trip.
Cheers Wills,
Been trying to get to the piper all season but tend to be working late. i may go straight there on wesnesday. well that is aslong as the phone system upgrade goes to plan otherwise i will be in work untill midnight again.
Motorcycle News??
Not sure exactly what you are after PaganP - but if you are wanting a quick run down of who's who in BSB, then you can probably get something from Duke Video that'll put you straight.
Cheers for that Bluesbiker, given me a starting point. basically i am after how the races, work limitations on bikes ect. i am sick and tyred of going places and the only topic of converation is bike racing. Usually i am with people so i have to sit there looking ineterested while board out of my tree as i can't follow the converation and get lambasted if i try and join in.
I actually quite enjoy watching the racing just don't know what is happening. I used to provide medical cover at oulton park. druids was my fave corner to park up on, you used to get some lovley crashes there. Old Hall / pit lane was another good spot. you used to get permission from race control to go wrong way roung track while the race was on the safety car. this became a race in it;s own right to get to the pit lane b4 the safty car otherwise everyone had to wait on the grid for me to get off the track.
oh yer i got my ambulance upto 90 at outlon. hit 110 on the main runway at mancheater airport chasing a Boing 737. once you have done that getting your knee down in walse is boring, but i digress.
OK here goes, the basics:-
MOTOGP - international racing series, all prototype machines, no road based bikes/chassis allowed
MotoGP - 800cc 4-stroke, they can have a variety of engine configurations, and the minimum weight is set by the number of cylinders
motoGP 250cc 2 stroke machines, the regulations are currently being discussed to move to 4 stroke machinery, no upper age limit for riders
motogp 125cc 2 stroke machines, there is an age limit for this class as it is designed to be the feeder class for the rest of the series, but riders can transfer from other race series
SUPERBIKE racing WSB is the international series, BSB the domestic series
Superbikes are 1000cc 4 cylinder or 1200 twin cylinder road bikes, the engines may be tuned, and the bodywork changed but the machines must retain the shape of the side on profile of the road bike and also the exhaust configureation, so if the road bike has two exhausts, the superbike must have 2. The suspension may be changed, electronics may be used such as traction control etc. Control tyres are used to level the field. There are minimum sales required of the road going version of the bikes to enable it to race
SUPERSPORT racing, WSS is the international series, BSS the domestic series
Supersport bikes are 600cc 4 cylinder, 675cc 3 cylinder and 750 twin cylinder road bikes, the rules regarding changes and tuning, sales etc is similar to superbikes. Again control tyres are used
SUPERSTOCK racing, also available in international and domestic race series
Superstock 1000 is obviously 1000cc machines
Superstock 600 is 600cc machines
There are very strict rules as to what can be modified on the bikes, no changes to engines or chassis, the suspension may changed. Control tyres are used, and they do not allow slicks, they have to be road legal tyres.
I have explained this to you before, but by your own admission, you get bored, and if you are not interested in it then you dont take the information in. The sort of discussion that my friend and i were having was in depth but that was because it involved many years of following the racing, knowing the background of various racers and teams and that is something that cannot be passed on in 5 minutes, especially during the quickfire entertainment that is Superpole!
A twist of the wrist by Keith Code is the riders Bible pagan. This is generaly the riding system that is used by most great riders. His techniques are also suitable for transfering to road riding. A worthy read at any time.
