Waking up after literally a day of 2 halves yesterday! The first 12 hours were brilliant, with a delicious ride on a Ducati thrown in to boot. But my drive home last night was a shocker - literally.
First part was ok, did the first 160 miles no problem. Then suddenly two almighty bangs from the front end of the car, with it veering everywhere, until I brought it under control and stopped it at the side of the road. My first thought was that a wheel had come off. As the A1 was still busy with HGV's at that point, and there was no road lighting, I decided the best option was to get it onto a garage forecourt conveniently positioned a few yards away.
On inspecting the damage I found both my tyres were flat - in fact shredded! So the RAC were duly called, who said it could be up to a 90 minute wait. I thought I'd be fine at the garage, but no, as it was by now 11.00 pm the manageress was closing up, so she turned off all the lights, went home and left me there on a pitch black forecourt.
I could never, never in a million years walk away and leave someone in a situation like that!
So, sitting in the car, all the lights off, doors locked, I noticed a car cruise by really slowly, then a few minutes later it came back the other way, doing the same thing.....and did it several times more....obviously looking to see who/what was in the car!
Nervous just doesn't begin to describe it!
When help arrived it was a sub contractor for the RAC - they were FAB!!!! Took me to their workshop, made me coffee - called out a mechanic, sorted the car with new tyres, checked that all was safe, and then escorted me back to the A1 and checked that I was ok with everything before they sent me on my way. Great lads they were.
By this time it was around 2.30 am and I was so tired so thought I'd find a layby to pull up in and have a quick kip, but they were all full of HGV's. So I pulled up behind the tail end of one, that had it's last couple of feet of wagon sticking out of the layby, but still on the hard shoulder. I was just dozing off when a police officer knocked on the window and asked if I'd broken down. When I said no, but told about what had happened earlier which had made me very late and very tired, he said 'in that case you can't stop here, you're causing an obstruction'.....and made me drive on...... and followed me for a bit to make sure I suppose!! I couldn't believe they'd rather me drive when i was dangerously tired than let me kip for 10 mins to clear my head.
I got home at around 4.00 am and I've never been so thankful to see my little house - ever!
Ps - once I was on my way in the car after all of this, I put the radio on - to find the band D - ream, belting out 'Things, Can Only Get Better' over the radio waves!!!!!!!
