Check your air filter could be spitting fuel back into the airbox

Check your carb floats, might be stuck and letting too much petrol through. Other than the smell does it run ok.

Check for splits / tears in any vacuum / breather hoses. Make / model / year / engine size / Fuel inj or carb info would help for further diagnosis.

Confusing as you say it runs fine ?!?!?! If the exhaust is as sooty an black as you say, you are DEFF overfueling !!! The smell is caused by the unburned fuel, Numerous reasons for this - - so bottom line is remove carbs, strip down, clean an reset, not forgetting to inspect the manifold rubbers. Model specific workshop manual would give all relevant info - - ie float hights an base settings for pilot air screws etc. Soz to be vauge .. .. but without them in front of me, its impossible to say. Have you had it long? has it always been like this? has the fuel consumption gto worse latley? has any one played with it lately?

Had one of the first ones of those in the country long ago, good all rounder. In winter check brakes for salt corrosion and rear cush drive bearings for wear, forks could have done with progressive springs. Did 74000 miles in 3years. Think I still have most parts of the ventura back pack system in the loft somewhere.
