Mick that link is good and looks ok.... I think thats more geared towards merchant navy/ standby boats...problem is slight colour blindness very slight but puts the brakes on anything other than medic and no promotion as under maritime law I can't take a bridge watch...

What about one of the other government branches? HMRC, Immigration or prison officer?

Its not common knowledge yet but all government departments will be either stopping any recruitment and allowing natural wastage to wittle down numbers. Even recruitment in the armed forces has been reduced by a third..... god its sods law that my time up is bang in the worst recession since the seventies.. ha ha

What about pub/club work? Get on the job training with one of the big boys, then go it alone, clutching those vital pieces of paper.

The start's pretty crap, cos you earn rubbish money and have to take orders from some snotty nosed brat, barely out of nappies, but it doesn't take long to work up the scale (& there's often live-in positions, which helps with housing costs). You'll either love it or hate it - often quite a good trade for ex-military, cos you're laid back enough to deal with the tossers you encounter on a daily basis, but more than handy enough when silliness threatens after they've overdone the alcopops

There's naff all out there at the mo, if you haven't got a bit of paper to say you can do the job. They tried to send me on a nearly 60 mile round trip for 4 hour shifts at minimum wage. Once I'd paid fuel & toll fees, I may as well have just paid 'em a tenner a week and stayed home!

you could try teaching in further education, we do courses for leasure and turisum and uniformed services, means doing lots of camps and walks with the students and most the teachers we have are ex forces

doubt I will ever grow up bro either, I never want to I will keep jumping in puddles, kicking heaps of autumnal leaves, and stuffing them down unsuspecting backs, making snow angels at silly o'clock through the years - but I will stay young at heart always, it's too much fun I'm stumped on this thread, really glad it's not me having to make the descision - Petes ideas a good one though as is Lou's

I could turn my hand to nearly anything but as you say if you haven't got the bit of paper NVQ tastic then you ain't cleaning the toilet lol. Like the ROV thing. I have resettlement money for courses about £500 but I can also claim accommodation and full subsistance. A lot of firms who run courses charge all in massage the costs to cover full course fees. I also have a thing called enhanced learning credits I can use them up 10 years after I leave as long as it's for building on an already squires skill, it's level 3 or above.....

Set up a paint ball shoot thingy. Could be done with either renting land off a farmer or some sort of partnership thing. Perhaps catering for city workers wanting to book a weekend thing for a load as a work trip or similar. Camping facilities etc. (perhaps not at first but there is scope to build it up). I know a guy who used to roadie wi Motorhead who set one up a bit back n he is doing good.

I guess when I grow up my 'dream' would be to open up a roadside cafe, a bit like the bus up County Durham way - I'd sleep on the top deck and feed/provide drinks from the lowerdeck, I just love looking after peoples needs food wise and chatting to folk - yep, I'd be very happy. Maybe locate it up in the wilds of Scotland though to enjoy that amazing scenery again

Not outside the realms of possibility Johnny - there's definitely a demand for bike touring holidays. Worth investigating the whys & wherefores of setting yourself up... or just applying to the firms already providing the service - I doubt that there'll be much of the £32k going to the bloke actually leading the trip, but money isn't everything... besides - you get to see how it all works before setting yourself up in competition
