you need to go into the security centre and turn of automatic updates. As for anti virus I would recommend ESET NOD32. it is slightly more expensive than Norton but it is far better. give me a call on Monday and I can get you a price. It is the Anti-virus that we install in work on all out business clients and we us it ourselves so we practise what we preach.

Change auto-update preferences, dont disable completely! They're there for a reason. You should set them to NOT download/install automatically, but rather let you choose what you want. When you choose your updates, you should NOT allow it to update your drivers (Such as wireless/network drivers). Antivirus - McAfee enterprise works perfectly on my vista laptop and PC. Small, compact, fast, secure... it's good.

not at all - you don't need to change your browser (IE works best with BM, and in fact some features on BM wont work with firefox!). If your internet is dead, it doesn't matter what browser you use. Just turn off automatic updates and see how you get on for a few days - it's in Control Panel

I have vista basic on my laptop and Macaffee works well with it, if you are a HSBC or Sky customer, you can get it for free.
