...or training centres, whatever you call them
I've just been reading Julie J's comments about instructors and my past experiences have been much the same so I was wondering are there any competent instructors at these places?
My experiences have been:
An instructor didn't listen when I said I didn't want to go out on the road just yet as I hadn't got the clutch / throttle control sorted (this was a few yrs ago, I'm fine now) and I almost got myself killed going too fast round a bend and ending up on the other side of the road while a car was coming towards me.
I was praised when I did a turn but I wobbled and I was constantly told to use my indicators even tho I used them EVERY time, the instructor obviously wasn't looking when I used them so assumed I hadn't.
I asked for lessons to be regular cos once a fortnite or whenever they felt like it wasn't any good for me, by the time my next lesson was happening I was nervous again and felt a bit rusty.
On one lesson I was told constantly to take my foot off the brake..the light was broken so it showed ON all the time
Another lesson I couldn't get the bike to start, woulda helped if the clutch cable was actually attached to the bike and not flopping about in the air.
I could write loads more but I won't.
will compose a long humourous catalogue of events about one particular riding school when i get time, but so far the majority have been fab, i really look forward to a days training cant go that often cos of work, i know lots of you love your track days, with me its a day out with a different instuctor cos they all have a different take on things and you get a really broad view that way, i look forward to it like going on holiday!!
Unfortunately for me I won't be experiencing any more instructors, good or bad. After 3 or 4 years, and thousands of pounds spent on all associated costs, I can't afford it anymore
I never passed my test cos I wasn't at test standard on the day but I managed to stay alive and never had an accident and I rode all year round so I can't be such a bad rider.
I had a bad experience with a local school although the 2 instructors I had were ok themselves, it was more the running of the school I had issues with. I didn't get my CBT with them so that was a waste of over £100.
just had a fantastic day out today with an advanced instructor working on observation, position and cornering, it all fell into place after about an hour and i really can see a big improvement, i should start writing a review, we could prob cover all of north yorkshire between us with the amount of combined training that we have done!
think your prob doing better than me roachy, youve got got Geoff with you for ongoing support and advice, i only get to go out on a sunday so really feel at a disadvantage
I doubt that very much Julie. You're riding a much bigger bike than me which is a different kettle of fish and I've got to start again from scratch when I get my next bike.
I feel I can learn things from everyone but esp those that have been riding longer than me - like you. You're the only person I know on a restricted bike so I look up to you a lot.
Speaking of Geoff, I'm sure he wouldn't mind going out with you to give you advice etc. He can wire you up to a radio so can talk to you like your instructors do.
thanks Geoff will take you up on that when the missus can spare you yes i am restricted, kids, money, leisure time, and now transport too! if i give it a good thrashing can still get 95 out of it though which i really do believe is plenty fast enough for a newbie
Oooh, that sounds great! Esp with free bacon butties, we likes that!
I'll have to get myself sorted out on this kind of thing once I've got my next bike and got the hang of stopping and starting it.
Is it expensive?
IAM is really cheap, about £100 for the year that includes lots of training havent really checked it out, independant instructors round here are about £25-£30 per hour ive found that you do get what you pay for todays session was prob best yet ive noticed a really improvement and also it will improve my car driving
sorry Karey, didnt answer your question, 1st lot of training was just to get me through my test so i did it with the cbt instructor just needed 2 half days and did it quick and close together so it was all fresh in my mind, then all of the training after my test has been very different cos learning to pass your test and learning to ride a bike are two very different things, in order to advance and improve you really need to change a lot of the mindset that you have try so hard to embed for your test so i would say splash the cash, get it over and done with asap and then learn properly cos it gives you so much more confidence and the result of that is more relaxed riding and a greater level of enjoyment which is why we all do it !
