Shane Byrne’s family have released an update on his condition after his Snetterton test crash last week, confirming he has undergone a successful surgery on spinal fractures.

Byrne suffered a nasty fall during the Snetterton in-season test last Thursday and was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with spinal fractures and neck injuries.

He underwent surgery on Monday to stabilise the spinal fractures and in a statement from Byrne’s family released by the team it confirms he is “alert and in good spirits but there is still a long road ahead in the recovery process”.

Byrne will remain in hospital for the next few days before doctors confirm the next steps in his treatment.

BSB has also confirmed the medical team who initially treated Byrne at the circuit are working closely with the hospital and thanked the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital team for their efforts.

Family Statement
“Following the incident at Snetterton last week, Shane underwent surgery on Monday (21/05/18) to stabilise his spinal fractures. We are happy to say the surgeons are pleased with how the procedure went.

“Shane is alert and in good spirits, but there is still a long road ahead in the recovery process. He will remain under close observation in the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Critical Care Complex over the next few days before undergoing further treatment.

“We are touched by the many messages of support we have received from fans over the last few days, but after several instances of well-wishers attempting to see Shane in hospital, we would request that our wish for privacy is respected at this difficult time.”

Update; Shakey is back in hospital😩

Social media posts showed him returning home last Tuesday in a brace while travelling in a helicopter, things looked hopeful. (Although the neck n back brace, bolted to his skull looked worrying.)

However, Petra, updated Twitter n Instagram yesterday morning with the news that he was was back in hospital; by posting a photo of Shakey along with the comment "Having rough morning. Back in hospital."

Praying it's only a 'blip' and he is on his way home very soon.
