OK firstly re non paying members - we ain't all affluent and to be honest there are times of financial embarrassment for myself hence the fact that I subscribe IF SOMEONE I NOD AT NODS BACK and they ain't a full member.
Ideas to improve BM - last year when there was the "friendly Biker" meet on I only found out coz a mate told me about it as being a non paid up member at the time I was not looking at the forum or events much. For things like that why not have some sort of running advert say at the top of each page perhaps just a small thing with a link to the events section and the relevent bit??
Second idea (I want ya all to know this idea thing is not normal for me n mi head hurts now wi 2 of em in one day!!) - How about some sort of Instant messaging thing as well as the PM s. I know I have had quite a few chats with people using the PMs which is great but unless ya sit there clicking the refresh button every few seconds it can be time consuming and sometimes folk think ya have gone n disappear themselves. (or am I just so boring they nod off??).
Just ideas Matt not criticism as the site works great for me.
OK third idea tonight !!!Agh!!!!!!!!!! For the forum would be good if there was some way to easily get back to where ya left off last time if ya see what I mean. For example a link for - show new posts since my last visit, or show new replies to my posts. Also perhaps an option to "watch a thread" and have an auto email sent if it gets a new post ??
Right brain overheated now. - Shutdown!!!!
WB - does it work for you though? You said you never tried but, but have you tried it now?
Steve - the homepage has the next events on it, there's a newsletter every month and the forums have an events section. Re the IM, there's already PM, chatroom and forums - anymore means of communication will become confusing for your average biker (this isn't a teenage computer-geeks site). If you have javascript enabled then you will receive a popup each time your receive a PM which should be sufficient.
Now, regarding the forum... good idea. There's the active topics page which shows you all the topics from all forums that have been posted in within X days. I may add an option of "Since my last post" as I also think that would be useful (and not so difficult to implement).
The "Watch this topic" is something I've been thinking about, but my problem there is that too many people don't add bikermatch.co.uk to their email "safe list" or "white list". This means that our emails go to their junk mail folder, gets deleted, then Yahoo/Hotmail/Gmail etc lower their trust value of emails from BM. I've just implemented a new email service though which should hopefully mean that these email providers can add us to a server white-list which would be great (though this is still being set up). I'll keep you posted on that.
Ok everyone I've got enough suggestions for the moment. I've had a tough few weeks and have run myself down a bit too much. I also start training for my new job next week and have no time for a bit to be making too many changes to the site. Thanks for your input
Just to say that yes, everyone had interpreted what I said correctly in that I was unable to get a Karma reading or the names of members from their photos when hovering the cursor over them. However, since then, when I tried it again - a miracle! The names and and Karma readings are displayed. So I don't know what you did Matt, but thank you. Either that or something was rectified in Firefox on one of its updates. I'll have to see if the bulk uploader works for me after this.
While it's all very well going on about Java which I always though was West of Krakatowa, Wannabe's point about some of us choosing 'crap' software and equipment was well made. Not all of us want to contribute to the Microsoft monopoly any more than we're already forced to.
I also agree with Matt that we don't want a site suitable for teenage geeks since most of us use computers as a tool for communication rather that as an entity in itself. Most of us regard computer problems as an infernal nuisance rather than a fascinating challenge so let's keep it simple.
And finally, regarding the posting of photo URLs, most people are sensible on the owners club sites which I have used by sizing their pictures properly before posting them. I believe that it would be a useful facility especially for ads.
what about some simple games so when the site is quiet we could have a mess about on there for a while like pac man , space invaiders, or some bike racing game so we could play other bm's online dont if its possable like but i have notticed that some other forums do have them .
it may be a way of keep users from being bored or give them something else to talk about and attract new peeps
what you think ??
ive seen it on other forums ian and it has kept me from coming on here so cant see why it wouldnt work other way round
and they could be bike related games couldnt they
bennets do a bike game...you jump over a distance the further you jump the more the bennets girls take there kit off.....not that i have ever played neil hodgsons bennets bike game !!!!!!!
i was playing one the other day where you got control of a streaker at the football grounds and you had to aviod the police was quite funny and to keep the girls happy you also had nude men too
