This may be an urban myth, but I heard that the big space beside the driver at the front of old black cabs, was so they were capable of carrying said hay.
Luggage was consigned to the boot and racks on the roof.
Only latterly has it become a luggage area.

Just found out it is illegalf for womaen to eat chocolate on public transport - wondered y that man was staring at me scoffing me mars bar wen on the bus, phew thot he was spell bound that my butt fit on the seat !!!!
