in 1920 Alf Ramsay was born. He grew up to manage England to their 1966 World Cup win and received a knighthood in recognition of it the following year.

Wonder who among his birthday sharers would win some kind of award, and what for?

In 2016 I very nearly didn't do the birthdays in time!

Meanwhile, back in 1989 legislation was passed to allow petrol stations to display fuel prices by the litre. We soon git used to the same numbers per litre as we'd paid per gallon, but thankfully it's a bit cheaper these days.

Hopefully that will allow our birthday boys and girls ti ride further and more often. Happy birthday to you all:

in 1901 Edward Turner was born. Edward was a motorcycle designer whose 4 cylinder engine design was rejected by BSA and subsequently sold to Aerial motorcycles - the legendary Ariel Square Four.

Of course you don't need to design engines to appreciate riding them, as I'm sure our birthday friends will testify. Happy birthday to you all:

my one and only chance to do birthdays today (phew)

in 1759 Robert (Rabbie) Burns was born and on this day for decades, maybe even centuries, Scots around the globe have spouted archaic verse and stabbed poor wee haggis puddin's wi daggers. If you've never experienced any of these things you've missed out, get yersels to Scottyland next year!

an even more traditional "happy birthday to you" greeting we still recite to everyone still alive and celebrating today. Have a good one:

in 1606 the trail for treason of Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators began.
I thought he'd have had pretty summary justice doled out to him back then, goes to show how ill-informed I am. Learning a lot here, lol.

in 1896 the first British motoring fine was issued. Walter Arnold was fined a pricely 1 shilling for exceeding the 2 mph limit in a built-up area. He passed the house of the local policeman doing 8 mph (how they judged the speed I don't know), the constable gave chase on his bicycle and after a 5 mile chase arrested him. There's no mention of points and I assume there weren't even driving licences back then.

Of course you lot will all have sparkly, clean licences, won't you?
Happy birthday to you all:

Lots of other rules have followed in the years since but the roads are no safer because they keep getting busier.
