Hello, I'm posting this for a friend.---
Hi all, I’m new to the biking community, had my first go of a bike 3months ago to get a bit of practice before my CBT, which I passed two months ago. A couple of weeks ago I decided that I wanted a bike on the road. Due to my height the bike would have to be around 30inches from floor to seat, and since I didn’t want a cruiser my options were limited to a sports bike. After some time searching I came across the Honda NSR, which I couldn’t afford, however this led me to the Yamaha TZR 125R costing me £700. The bike is a 1994 model with around 15,000 miles on the clock, upside down forks and a micron exhaust.
Since purchasing the bike I have had the odd problem with a spark plug and oil, nothing major just my accidental neglect. What is of some concern to me is it’s constant cough, randomly the bike will loose speed and start to splutter, it can last for a few seconds up to minutes depending if I’m travelling up hill. I have tried dropping down and up gears making no difference, then all of a sudden the bike will kick in and rapidly increase in speed, causing my to jolt on the bike.
I will be completely honest and say I know nothing about motorbikes, just the basics of topping up oil, petrol, etc….
I was wondering if my problem could be because of a restriction, as the guy who I bought it from said its 12bhp, with the ability of being 33bhp. From my three day test of the bike I’ve noticed that in first gear I can get 20mph, 2nd = 40 and 3rd = 50-60, the fourth to sixth gears tend to slow the bike down to 40, I was wondering if this is because of a restriction, not enabling me to reach high speeds. The maximum speed I’ve had is around 65mph going down a hill for around 2minutes.
Would the above be symptoms of a restriction?
How would I check for a restriction/ district my bike?
Any other advice would also be appreciated J

Jade/Paul,
The restriction would not cause the bike to cough or splutter even at full throttle so i think you can cross that one out. To find out how it's restricted just google it but be aware your insurance may become invalid if you start tinkering with it! It sounds to me like you have a fuel problem and it could be something as simple as a dirty fuel filter (if it's got one) or dirt in the bottom of the tank, especially as it gets worse going uphill. The muck rolls to the fuel tap up hill and can stop fuel getting to the carb properly. To check it, take the fuel pipe off the carb and empty the tank into a container, see if there's loads of bits floating in it. Have a look inside the tank with a torch (not a match if you like your eyebrows) and if it's dirty, flush it out with loads of paraffin and let it dry. Put it back on the bike, re-connect the fuel pipe, fill it and see if that works. If not it's time to check the carb but try this first and let us know if it solves the problem. Why don't you join the site, it's free, you'll get loads of advice and you might even find yourself a lady biker lol

Smoking too much can just be down to mixture settings on the carb or worn piston/rings. If the bike is running it's not major but will need looking at, see Emzeds post about your bike Paul and apologies to Jade, didn't realise she was a girl
I have recently rebuilt a TZR 125 engine .. so i know quite a bit about them .. it was in a Sachs .. but basically same engine .. I rebored it .. new piston/rings etc .. Sounds like it`s running to rich .. Oil/Fuel mixture not Air/fuel .. Are you using synthetic or mineral 2 stroke ol ? As this makes a difference ? The Exup valve may be sticking too ? or might need adjusting ? How old is the spark plug ? Loads of reasons why it could be spluttering .. Has carb been cleaned recently .. or put together wrongly ?
