Derbyshire CC's website says the road will be closed from 8pm to 11pm anytime from the 6th to the 17th for resurfacing works.
This is not to say Ian is incorrect but a three day closure on a major route for lining is very unusual.
If anyone would like to know more details, I can find out.
Geoff, I don't know which bit of the Derbyshire County Council web site you were viewing, but this page:

together with the signs posted all around Glossop, all state that the road will be closed, the dates that it'll be closed and why it'll be closed.

A main road through the High Peak will close for three days this month while the road markings and lines are repainted by Derbyshire County Council.
The A57 Snake Pass will be closed from 6am on Monday 13 July to 6am on Thursday 16 July from the junction at Hurst Road, Glossop to the junction with the A6013 at Ashopton Viaduct while work takes place.
Drivers are asked to find alternative routes such as the A628 or the A635. Drivers on the M60 and M67 will be warned about the closure using the electronic warning boards.
The £100,000 project has been scheduled to avoid the main holiday periods to reduce traffic delays as much as possible.
Councillor Chris Jackson, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We’re committed to improving roads, particularly in rural areas and we would ask motorists to bear with us while this essential work is carried out.”
Mr P is absolutely right!
The closure of the A57 is now on Derbyshire's NRASWA road closure list;
http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/applications/old/road_closures/
For anyone who is interested, this list shows all road closures in the Derbyshire area that have been approved by committee and then signed off by the NRASWA office.
But to the matter in hand, I suspect Derbyshire have decided that instead of having a rolling works along the A57 with shuttle working (traffic lights) for however long, say two weeks, they are going to close the road in its interity for three days and just get the job done.
I also suspect that they will do their utmost to open the road before the three day closure ends, perhaps even after only two days, but the fact is this is liable to cause havoc for adjacent Pennine crossings.
I am still surprised at their decision.
