read this in the Bournemouth echo today, really sad this, a 65 yr old biker on his first day of retirement killed as a 93 yr man old pulled out of a side rd,no indication of excess speed on the bikers part.
That happened to my mate a few years back on the road to Yeovil. Old fella pulled straight across front of him. some of these old duffer shouldent be on the road there a danger to all around them.
so sad, condolences to the riders family. He should have been enjoying life to the full now.
How can they justify a 93 yr old driving? Im sorry there might be a few that are competent, but the majority cant be?!?
Reactions are slower, joints stiffen, memory fading.. thats me in my 40's ! Fek knows how the octogenerians and above cope?!?
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090402/tuk-driver-93-bann...23e80.html shoulda been the rest of his life!! the guy who ran me of the road looked as old as him mouth agape like old men do starin blankly into space!!
they should make it more like a pilots licence... you can fly at any age but you have to prove you're capable.
Even in your 20's you have to have a very extensive medical test every 2 years AND pass another practical examination with an examiner. Each year you have to have a minimum number of hours experience too to keep your licence.
As you get older, more tests are required... including a full medical exam every 6 months! They test your eyes, reactions, heart, ears... everything.
Respects to the gents family, very sad.I agree that certain tests should be taken regularly, and as Matt said, eyes, ears, etc. My parents are both 75 and although they're great and the best parents ever,it's scary being a passenger with them.Ma drives like Micheal Schumacher and Pa is soooo cautious!! God,hope they never read this
Just been told by my colleagues that here in the Netherlands, anyone over 70 wanting to drive has to resit their exam every year. And (we think) over 80 is twice per year!
i wont bother driving when that age [not long now!]money you save in running cost's etc you get taxi's train's etc plus ive the bus pass no need for personell transport!luckily i live nr shop's an pub's an town, unfortunately lot's old peep's in the stick's depend on there car with post offices closing and irregular public transport.
Some time back, my son locked the keys in the car while my wife was at her parents in Lincoln, so I ran the spare over on my bike. Her mother is 85yrs old, and many a time she misses things and pulls out when she shouldn't have, basically an accident waiting to happen. We got into an argument because she said to the mrs if I was in an accident on that "thing" she wouldnt blame her for leaving me. The conversation went on to include comments like "Well its the motorcyclist fault for ridding something so vulnerable". As you can imagine, last time I visited there, did well not to swear at her.
Oh yeah, then story number two. My dads mum died when she was 92yrs old, nothing to do cars, bikes, etc. I can remember sitting in the back of her old moggy minor, laughing our socks off that she drove all the way from the church to home with her windscreen wipers full on full boar, wasn't even raining, but she never even noticed. Quite scary now that ya think of it, yet they haven't changed the rules still. Considering all the rules and regs on health and safety, why haven't they addressed it?
