There are so many cv templates out there now... Anyone know what's the generally accepted practice regarding cvs at the mo? I know a few years back there was a bit of a craze for including a pic of yourself on your cv, but that seems to have died a death from what I can see. Someone was telling me that it's best not to include a personal interests/hobbies bit nowadays as it's just ignored and was only ever used if they couldn't think up proper questions to ask you? Anyone in the know... or know any good web sites for info... much appreciated :o)

try this site: jobsite (dot) co.uk There's a link in there the writing CV's etc. & it's a pretty good search engine for jobs

Thanks muchly Looks like a good site... I thought I'd better start the ball rolling - just in case I'm "sacked" in my absence while I'm trying to recover from surgery! He wants me to contact him DAILY to inform him what's occurring... Aye, right! It's quite simple... you will not see me at my desk for at least 6 weeks - get used to the idea.

Still... not a problem... I must find out what time they'll be sitting down to their Xmas dinner and time my daily phone call for maximum disruption

well WB from what little I know about HR rights etc, you can't get 'sacked' whilst off sick (sue em if they try it!) & they're also not allowed to contact you whilst you're off sick. The fact that you've got a sicknote should suffice.

From reading up on it, I get the impression they can make your sick time your notice time i.e. for redundancy... which would be the option he'd take - close the office down, so no job exists any more. Didn't know they weren't supposed to contact you though - that's interesting... Although... I think it's probably more likely that he'll choose to make me a very unreasonable offer when I get back of a changed position and a halved salary. Or neither of the above and he'll just continue being shouty, sweary and chucking stuff across the office at me until I get fed up and tell him to poke it But apparently, the fact I'm having essential surgery counts as me "having a whinge". Nice bloke eh?!

Whilst you're in the hosp WB - make an appointment for him to have his nuts chopped off & then tell him to stop whinging as it'll only be a little scratch!!

Dagnabbit! Missed a deadline for one that would've been perfick... just round t'corner from me too... midday today... d'oh! Why didn't they take the advert down once the deadline was reached? Starting salary £xx,000, with progression through Contribution Related Pay to £xx,001 per annumWhat's "Contribution Related Pay" when it's at home? Do they mean performance related?

I know a few years back there was a bit of a craze for including a pic of yourself on your cv, but that seems to have died a death from what I can see. Mmm I've never heard of that Wannabe, first I've heard of including a pic. It's a definite no-no. I don't put my age either, don't wanna scupper me chances before they've even interviewed me. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Someone was telling me that it's best not to include a personal interests/hobbies bit nowadays as it's just ignored and was only ever used if they couldn't think up proper questions to ask you? As you know I was made redundant 3yrs ago and the job centre Gestapo send us unemployed on back-to-work courses, which are compulsory, and we are taught (again and again) how to create / construct a C V, amongst other stuff, and they are always telling us to add our interests to our C Vs. The layout has changed a little, where we were told to put our qualifications on the first page we are now told to put them on the second page. Personally I jiggle mine about a bit, (my C V) to suit ME, not THEM. It's a good idea to put interests in as it gives an employer a bit of an idea as to your personality. You have to grab their attention without resorting to anything outrageous. 2 pages are the maximum recommended for C Vs and if you use any abbreviations to add the words in full. For example: ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) sometimes the person who is dealing with C Vs doesn't know what the abbreviations mean. They are just short listing the candidates for someone else to interview. Always get a friend or family member to read thro your C V AND cover letter before you send it off. Don't trust your spellchequer lol Good luck Wannabe

My spool Czech works prefect!

Thanks for the tips Kwak - much appreciated.

The photo thing was probably going back about 10 years or so - I was doing up some cv's for a firm - it was Uni graduates mainly and "media studies" type degrees. Actually... that was a cushy little number... I wonder if he's still going? I used to do his cv's during quiet periods at my other job and was paid very handsomely indeed!

Sadly, whilst I am the "proud" holder (technically) of the ECDL, my rotten boss of the time withheld the certificate, along with my First Aid At Work one, 4 months' expenses and my final month's salary! I considered the industrial tribunal route but then the threatening phone calls started and then the face to face threats in the car park... I decided to opt for the quiet life and let him keep his measly certificates and a few quid!

I have worked for some delightful individuals in my time!

There seems to be very conflicting advice out there regarding the "interests" bit - but if that's the job centre's advice, I'll go with them. Good idea about the age thing too - I know they're not SUPPOSED to discriminate against you on age these days, but I'm sure they do... once you're the wrong side of 40, it's old dog, new tricks time

To be honest the style of your CV varies from industry to industry. I'm the IT industry and CV's are generally in bullet point form with a list of the technology used. As mentioned before Jobsite is a good starting point.
