Friends,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Due to the recent increase in traffic to the site, we need to migrate to new servers.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
To ensure a smooth and uneventful transfer, this will be broken into 3 stages of downtime as follows…<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
1) On Monday 8pm-10pm GMT we will move the database services to a new server.<o:p></o:p>
2) On Tuesday 8pm-10pm GMT we will move the web services to the same new server.<o:p></o:p>
3) On Thursday, if the new server is working fine after 2 days, we will leave it. If the server is struggling then the database services will be split off to another new server. Downtime will be 12-4pm GMT<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
The downtime scheduled is more than necessary, to allow for any problems. Hopefully each step will only take 1 hour. I apologise for the bad timing, but unfortunately I do also have a day-job L<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Following stage 2, DNS servers will be updated. What this means is that you might have to reboot your computer (Or run an ipconfig/flushdns command for the tech-savvy) to gain access again to the site (Or just wait a few hours).<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
If anything doesn’t go to plan then we will roll-back everything back to as it is now.
Thanks for your cooperation.
~Matt
Ok Stage 1 is complete.
However - it could go belly-up any minute now, as I'm not sure how well the server will hold up with the huge number of evening visitors. Best time to test it I suppose
yea me too.
I think it will be fine. The real test will be trying to migrate the web services to the server tomorrow. It's much more complicated, and I've a good feeling that it might be too much for the server (Which is now already being battered).
Looks like we're gonna need 2 of these servers, which is fine but I'd rather get it working on 1 if possible.
Luckily I spend all day everyday building and programming these servers, I know how to tweak every ounce of performance out of them
And before anyone asks... Today's step will only increase the speed at which you can read and write content to the database. So - posting a forum message, writing a PM etc will be faster.
What it doesnt speed up is the download of each page. So, for example, if the pictures on each page are slow to download then that might be fixed with Stage 2 tomorrow.
so far CONFUSED..maybe i should emigrate wiv the web to wherever.....dunno ,bout this technical stuff.......will i be able to type with more than 3 fingers when it,s done??
read my first post! lol. 2 hours max, maybe just 30 minutes or so.
If it doesn't work well when everyone is using it, then i will fail back which will mean another hour of downtime.
Its running fast at the moment which I'm happy with.
Ok there's a problem with the new server... it takes AGES (15-20 seconds) to load a person's photos (or an event's photos).
This is due to my bad designing when I first made the site. I need to fix it but it will require a major overhaul of the code which I will have to do on thursday.
Please be patient if view profile pictures, in fact avoid it if you can.
DO NOT keep clicking if a page doesn't open, you'll just be killing the server more
Everything has been rolled back. There is a big problem with performance of the profile/event photos pages on the new server.
It isn't workable, so I've rolled back to the main server.
The database will continue to run on the new server though (Working really well).
There - all further plans mentioned in my first post are cancelled from this point on
Everything has been rolled back.
The issues with the events/profile photos were too bad to continue with.
All further changes are now cancelled until further notice
The database will continue running on the new server though
Summat wrong with the clock? Fazergirl seems to be ahead of herself by about five hours - maybe we're on Indian time? This message 22.57 BST - let's see what it's logged as.
