Maybe some of the smaller prizes could be given away in a draw but for the larger prizes a certain amount of effort could be rewarded.
(Mind you, saying that, I have no chance of collecting all those nameplaces - I am a fool to myself... )

The idea isn't just to giveaway prizes, it's to get people engaged in the site and to make it more interactive/dynamic.
Photo competitions are a brilliant idea, and we can combine several prizes into the one competition. e.g. So far...
First to get A-Z
Best alternative to X
Most international places
Largest group photo
Funniest/Most Unusual
The competition could run for 6 months over summer to give everyone a good chance to compete for at least one of the prizes.
TM - good one, but wanna keep it inside the 'one' competition for now. Any spin-offs from the "A-Z" idea is great (I suggested the biggest group pic by a sign, could be arranged between BMers at an event).
Hmm... how about nominating a letter for a month and seeing who can get the most photos of nameplaces (or similar) beginning with that letter?

ok so a new section will be created so applicants don't fill up their profile space, and so that non-members can also apply.
You'll be able to upload to this new section as you can in your profile, and when you enter you have to specify if a photo is national or international, and the name of the town it's of.
Each picture must contain the member posting it and also their bike (or any bike).
Moderators will verify each photo and it's location etc. We will also be checking for any photoshop'ing and anyone caught faking a photo will be banned from the competition.
Main competition = First to get A-Z of town namesWinner's Prize = A set of Bridgestone tyres for your bike plus 1 year's membership to Biker Match.
2 Runner up prizes = 1 year's free membership to Biker Match

Most international place names
Largest group photo
Funniest/Most Unusual photo
Prizes = Set of Bridgestone tyres for every winner and a 6 month membership to BM for the 2 runners up in each category.
Yes staff will be able to take part. Voting will be done by any member who is logged in (only one vote per person for each sub category, like funniest photo).
Can someone please submit an example photo to me to use on the "Information" page of the competition as an example?
