T C forgive my ignorance but what is 'earth hour?' I've never heard of it.
Which lights do you mean, bike or all household lights?
I leave the light in the kitchen on cos it's an energy saving one and by the time it warms up enough to see to cook with I've done cooking. All my light bulbs are E S, except in the loo.
It was a thingy organised by the WWF Kwak (not the Wrestling one, the other WWF)... all over the world, people were supposed to switch off their lights at 8.30pm for an hour, in a call to make world powers take action on climate change...
Famous landmarks were participating and various businesses... hopefully not the airports though
I have Earth Hour most nights in my house... especially when I'm hiding from the bailiffs!

I'm one of those crazy fools who believe that we don't actually have that much effect on climate change. was happening long before we turned up.
I'll tell you wot though. I'll turn em on and off a couple of times for ya now
Kwak - what WB said!!
I'm with you bluesbiker. I am all for careful use of the planet's finite resources but human's affecting climate change - phooey!!
em - are you living afloat or just off-grid?
p.s. Don't know if the Co-Ops in England/Ireland/Wales are doing it but I saw FIVE energy saving bulbs (75W) for 40p yesterday!!
No we don't Blues... but I'd still like to see a lot less use of fossil fuels now that we have so many alternatives available... it's a finite resource... and should be reserved for PETROL production so we can all stay on t'roads!
& there's no need for wastefulness... whether it be power usage or the astounding amount of perfectly edible food that simply gets lobbed in the bin these days! Ridiculous situation... folk are still starving in parts of the world, yet people here are chucking stuff if it's a minute past the "best before" date, or there's a little mould on the edge of their lb of cheddar that they've only had a tiny sliver of. *tuts*
Having had food poisoning twice, ill for 2 weeks with second lot and lost half a stone in a week, and having a dodgy gut (I B S) I'm one of those who chucks food by the 'use by' date.
I remember when E S bulbs were very expensive, now they are giving them away.
The "best before" date indicates that there are a good 2 days minimum past it when it's definitely going to be OK to eat... but they stick it on water fer crying out loud!
They advertise that it's taken thousands of years, seeping through volcanic rock... but you gotta drink it within 3 months after they've shoved it in a bottle! *tuts*
"Use by" is a slightly different kettle of fish, but even that is usually way earlier than it needs to be.
I tend to pop to the shop most days... walk up the road at the mo, or stop at a supermarket on the way home from work when I'm working.
They tend to look at me like I'm a bit sad when I stick single veggies on the checkout, but at least I know I'll use them and won't end up chucking half a pack away
hands up, got to admit i'm guilty of food waste, tend to buy too much as my daughters are veggie but have a lot better social life than me so are never in, and son comes home on leave whenever he can on wkends so I buy food in for him and he,s never in..if I tot it up into £notes then I would probably be more carefull....
need to try harder!!!!!
I'm "off grid" TC no nasty suprises through the letter box
I'm with WB on the food issue, never heard of common sense folks?
Our grandparents managed without fridges FFS
and we made it, with probably a better immune system as a benefit.
EM, in the days of our grandparents they had proper food with little or no additives in them and it still lasted for ages in the larders...it does not last for days in fridges these days.....
aqnd youre right, less illness...
I know what you mean... I tend to avoid processed food wherever possible Craig... I built up an oversensitivity to *everything* a few years back, so now try to stick to basics and make everything from scratch - then I know exactly what's gone into it. I have to watch things like sugar, wheat, yeast, dairy... in small amounts and not regularly, it's not a problem.
Amazingly though, you even have to watch what you *think* is a plain cut of meat in the supermarkets - they often add sugar & all sorts to it! Crazy. I'm a real label-checker. I tend to stock up when I'm feeling flush at an excellent butchers I use - but it's miles away, so not practical for regular trips
Realistically, food is SO cheap here - we complain about the price hikes, but when you look at the figures for average percentage of your income that's spent on food, it's much smaller now than it was say, 15-20 years ago... It's unsurprising that we've become wasteful... and it does take a little effort to change that...
WB--dont mention checking labels, I've had to get new specs so i can read labels with my girls being veggie, people dont realise but i cant even buy certain main brands of yoghurt because they contain gelatine etc whereas chicken pot noodles are ok for veggie!!!!!youre right about cost of food, if it were dearer we probably wouldn't waste as much!!!but also would not eat as much fruit and veg because they to are cheaper these days so its a catch 22 I think???
