Seeing PaganPrince admit to being a geek (as am I), I thought I would start a new thread to discuss gadgets that do work, those that don't and those that should be invented.....
To get the ball rolling:
I carry an Easily Showily GPS tracker with me on long rides. It is like a large USB key.... pop it in your pocket and when you get home just stick it in your PC and it automatically opens up Google Earth (or similar) and shows the route you have just taken. At any point you can interrogate your speed.. it also shows you going into and out of cafes!!! Think I paid £40 for it.
I also use a bluetooth communicator on my helmet to link to my phone and GPS via my iPaq Travel Companion if I need it.
The use of Black Box recorders came up in the thread on the hit & run biker victim.
Found the T-eye Automated Driving Recorder on the Maplin website which looks pretty good.
Does anybody know if the evidence provided by this would be legally admissible as evidence?
Also, does anybody know of any insurance providers reducing their premium if one is fitted in this country?
i'm fookin lost ere TC!! lookin at the gps[which is in yer pocket!!} AFTER the ride???? bst gadgets i got are me mobile, mp3, and heated grips which ive jus fitted an wish i'd got yonks ago!!

I like to ride blind... have a rough idea of where I am going but just choose roads I like the look of and then when I get home I can see where I have been (and what speeds I was travelling if I wanted to!).
It is just a small GPS tracker - it has no screen or navigation capabilities (well, it has an LCD display to show current position and speed if required).
Will be fitting heated grips to a friends bike this week some time.... are they really that good?
I just wore thin wool thermal gloves under my riding gloves last winter but my hands were almost unusable on long runs in sub zero temperature so may invest....
they are brill !!got mine of ebay 60 squid for Oxford grips to fit inch bars[smaller bars are cheaper!}downside is they are fitted to the battery so i drained it after leaving em switched on !! but they are easy to fit!they supplied sticky tape to fix control to the bars but had to use super glue!!real wanky way of fittin em!!so far ive used em on chilly evenings at about quarter to halfway settin! ps, i had to file some plastic ribs of the throttle tube to make em fit but that was the only bother!
I was advised not to use heated grips with gortex gloves by Hien Gerrike because it stops the natural balance oh heat from your hands acting with the gortex properly (something to do with outer and inner heat co efficiant he said) and would destroy the waterproofness of the gloves. So I bought gortex (wind proofers) inner liners (not waterproof wind proof). So far been excellent apart from the fact the gloves were reduced in their winter sale by 25% just a few days after I bought them effectively would have given me the liners for 99p grrrrrrrrr
Heated Grips are OK.
They only warm the parts in contact with the grips, though. Not so good on a nekkid bike, like a Cruiser.
Easy to fit.
Wire them into a switched live, NOT the battery.
That way they will switch off when you turn off the ignition.
For me, gadgets come in many guises.
I'm not a big fan of electronics, so forget yer iPods and anything else that's just a variation on a theme. I still use Minidiscs.
I do love some of the mechanical genius out there, though.
Just about everything in my collection of lockpicks comes under this heading. Loads of groovy things of such amazing simplicity.
Add CB radios, coz they're just fun.
Helmets with sun visors.
Hmmm... thanks for the input guys. I will see how my friend's grips function and decide what to do then (even if I have to sacrifice my Willie G Skull grips for a few months!).
Another option I am considering is to get some windscreen washer tubing, sticking one end in my urethra, taping it up the side of my stomach to a t-piece on my chest so I can run a pipe down each arm into some Marigolds I am wearing underneath my leather gloves. Then when I feel my hands freezing up I can use warm urine to get the circulation going again... Obviously I would have a hole in the end of each finger and run it as a total loss system......
..or maybe I will just stick with Plan A....
any input of warmth is good wether cruiser or not an its better to have them than not!, jus to feel sommat hot under yor hands is nice[mus visit julie or hg one day!] will get round to fittin to live one day jus took the easy route as the cables had brass eyelet fittings to go on the battery,will the thinner wire get hot?as the wire used on the grips is fairly thick from the battery as it draws more current if yu see what i mean?
Wouldn't take technical advice from ttaskmaster - he can't even get the flash to work on his camera..
