I have thought about doing it but I would spend at least a week over the ride just dont see the point in rushing. Im sure there will be a few that will be interested
You're right JP . A week would be better. Mainly coz you have to do the journey twice : Home to Top, Top to Bottom, Bottom to Home. Traffic plus weather? Gonner be a night run. B&B organised both ends . Young ladies/gents organised to massage achy bits. This really could be an absolute hoot. CANNONBALL YAY! Good luck with this event . It could turn into an annual one . A BM special.
I'm with everyone else, doing it in a day is pointless cos you miss all the good bits. I'd also say doing it bottom to top is better, that way your leaving the traffic and drudgery behind the further you travel. Oh and one other thing, both lands end and john o groats are shit, try and avoid if possible. :-) Take a week over it and enjoy.
Iron Butt rally crew do this every year, or they used to.
Its about 840 miles in 24 hours, its doable but small fuel tanks and breaks take there toll on your ave speed.
Its amazing how hard to hold the 35mph ave speed you will need to do it. Many ride outs fail to average that over any distance above 100miles. Best get fit and fit a large fuel tank.
Is it worth the idea of doing this as week long trip without motorways, maybe for next year? was thinking between Easter and Spring bank with "central" start point
I did it a few years back and took a week over it. The run from Durham to LE was a long 'un but not too hard work with an early start... but it was a bit boring (motorways). From there on in we had a great time, stayed in pubs every night and kept it to 200 - 250 miles each day. Most of it keeping off the motorways except when necessary to avoid the cities. Highly recommended. Someone going to plan it for 2016 then?
I will have look see what can come up with , routes ,dates etc. show you at KISS and maybe take more ideas on board Any suggestions gratefully accepted G2G new wheel arrived
Sorted out rough route Start and end at Squires so round trip about 1800 miles with no motorways. Would participants want to camp or use hotels About third week April sound ok?
Only reason for a set date is so people can book time off work. Idea of early in year was that for past few years weather has been pretty good around Easter or just after. But it is early days yet and dates, meeting places etc can be discussed and arranged between anyone who is interested in doing the run
I am interested in doing some long hall adventures over the next few years before I get old and decrepit well more than now. This might be an easy starter at least if I drop out I'm in the right country. One thing I do want to do is take a ride up into the arctic circle not in the winter!! when its light all day and night. In a few years time after I stop working I may just have a go at doing the UK coastline or as near as you can get on a road bike.
I would suggest starting at LE. Saturday everyone makes their way there. Sunday, LE to Gloucester area Monday, Gloucester to north Lakes Tuesday, Lakes to Fort William Wednesday, Fort William to Ullapool Thursday, Ullapool to John O Groats Friday, JOG to Borders / Northumberland Saturday and Sunday everyone heads home.
