Speeding prosecutions are a 'postcode lottery'

Speeding prosecutions are dished out in a postcode lottery with the chances of getting one varying widely from one region to another, according to a report.

One in eight motorists in North Wales received points on their licence for speeding in 2007 compared to one in 100 in Durham.

For all traffic offences, Northamptonshire led the way in England and Wales with on in six motorists getting points.

Durham was again bottom of the table with a rate of one in 50.

In Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway beat even North Wales, with one in five getting points.

The rate of drivers getting points for using mobile phones also varied, from 1% in Merseyside to one in 500 in Leicestershire.

A spokeswoman for the magazine Auto Express, which obtained the figures, said: “The risk to your licence simple depends on where you live.”

On a slightly different note, if they know the proportion of folk using a mobile, they must know the quantity committing the offence. So why aren't they doing something about it ?

I was stopped for speeding once (going back a good few years) , I had been to collect something off an ex & the road used to be a 50 but had been dropped to 30, I did not know & was not paying attention & got pulled over for speeding ... I explained to the officer that I used to live in the area & was not aware of the change ... he let me off However as I got back in the car he stopped me & pointed out that I could have had 3 points for speeding & also 3 points for not wearing a seatbelt, needless to say I hung my head thinking oh bugga, but he just advised me to put it on ... As I did this he leaned over ... 'and its another 3 points for being on your mobile phone' he stated shaking his head *gulp* yes I had been on the phone telling my mom I was on my way. Needless to say someone was looking down on me that day as that was all I got from the very nice man in the blue uniform lol ...

Think i've mentioned in another thread that Durham has only one fixed speed camera and everyone knows where it is!

Same accident rate as anywhere else but no cameras and no point hungry coppers. Does this mean speed is not the be all and end all of accident causation I wonder

On a different note, people using their phone and driving should get a month ban for it. A blue tooth ear piece is less than 15 squid now but peeps still prefer to put everyone else at risk instead. Personally I think they should be removed from their vehicle at the roadside, stripped naked and hung upside down from the nearest tree so everyone passing can see what a thick, ignorant, selfish toss pot they are and then made to walk home after their vehicle and contents have been confiscated. Incidentally its great fun watching people in the rear view drop their fone mid conversation as I do an emergency stop for no reason and if it all goes wrong it's very easy to prove whose fault it was by their fone records

In my defence on that one RK ... It was before bluetooth I have a bluetooth headset now, but even so quite a lot have ignored my phone when I am driving .... mind you that could be because its been my mother on the phone

I pulled up beside a guy couple of weeks back. He had just cut me up on a roundabout not indicating and on the phone. He had pulled over to pick up his wife. Prob who he was on the phone to. I told him what he had done and he looked bit embarrised and applogised. I looked in the back and there were to babies strapped in the rear seats. His wife went nuts at me shouting and swearing. He looked even more sheepish and mouthed sorry again as I was pulling away. Hopefully he will think bit more next time. And I did feel bit sorry for him as Im sure she was going to bend his ear all the way home.
