I know this isn't specifically BIKE news but it applies to all road users.
The Highways Agency is preparing to remove 20 road-side signs in Northumberland, because it believes drivers are suffering from information overload, and so are ignoring safety messages displayed on the signs.
Safety messages were erected on the signs on a single carriageway stretch of the A1 in the 1990s in a bid to cut the number of casualties on the road, and justify the use of speed cameras. Messages included details of the number of casualties on the road, with other signs advising motorists to slow down.
The Highways Agency notes that the messages now seem to be going over driver’s heads, and have branded the signage as dangerous as a result.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p> </o:p>

Why are they always wise AFTER the fact? Don't these people do research/tests (or use plain old common sense) before they add more street 'furniture' to already over-crowded streets?

It's called "Clutter removal" Kwak and everyone is now agreed that fewer signs are generally better.
As far as being "wise after the fact", surely this is the basis of wisdom lol! Being wise BEFORE the fact is not called research, it's called premonition!!
