Why is it that lots of people who you message don't reply even if it's to say thanks but no thanks how much effort does it take?????

Also remember that some people are just rude and if they can't be bothered to reply they wasn't worth worrying about.

Check that your message has actually be read, not everyone signs up for message alert emails and there are a lot of dormant or occasional-use accounts too.

What's even worse is when they send you a nod. You reply and send a message and then bam ..tumbleweed!!

A nod is just that a nod, Some members will just send a because they have looked at your profile but don't necessary want to start chatting.
