My Grandfather was at war
On his ship HMS Exmoor
Sydney Arthur Staples, William Llewellyn son
The twenty fifth of February nineteen forty one
12 miles off the coast of Lowestoft
One hundred men were lost
A German torpedo boat was his foe
It's captain and crew he didn't know
He must have killed outright for sure
For such a strong swimmer would have easily made the Suffolk shore
With salt water running though his veins
He rejoined the Royal Navy when the 2rd world war came
So he left his wife and son to go back to the sea
So now I mourn the Grandfather I will never ever see.
