whilst stationary on the cafe car park the other day my speedometer went from 0 to 160,and every where else in between then stopped working. Is it the sensor on the wheel or something else? Bike is my FZS600 FAZER, 2000 plate.

Have a look in he workshop manual. Yamaha always used the speedo or rev counter as a diagnostic fault code reader. Depending on what it dose and the numbers it reads would be the fault its displaying. If its doing this of course.

I've done that, it should register on the rev counter but it's not. Is there a way I can check the sensor with a multi meter???

Yes. Sensor should be a hall effect one so as the pick up spins past the sensor it should register a small voltage. Would be easer with an osiliscope but it can be done with a multimeter set to DC.
