Bought a 2007 BMW RT1200SE with the dreaded whizzy brakes on board and was told you have to take it to the dealer to replace the brake fluid on the bike. Have taken off the fairing and the tank to find a nice big block of alloy with 6 bleed points on the unit.
As the brake lever does feel soggy and not knowing how long the brake fluid has been in the bike can you use any DOT4 brake fluid to bleed out the system and replace the old for new?
Used to the usual direct feed master on the handlebar and simply replace in the reservoir with the ring spanner on the bleed nipple.
Would have found another BMW if I had known it had an electrically operated servo motor buzzing away when the brake lever is applied.

Thanks chaps

Chris

Hi Flying brick.

I have worked on a few of these and to be honest the 2007 bike shouldn't have servo brakes (does it make a whining noise when you pull up the lever? no noise means you have just the electronically connected brakes.

You will have three master cylinders in the circuit most people miss the one under the tank!

The procedure for bleeding isn't difficult it's just complicated and you must follow the bleeding methods and order correctly in order for it to work.

There's plenty of info out there for this on the 'net and you don't need a computer to do it, that's just a myth.

Best course of action is get genuine workshop manual and follow it to the letter, that way it will save damaging the abs valve block.

Most of the people with threads out there on this are riding GSadventurers. Basically they are the same bike so the info will be of use to you. any of the special tools you will need can be made there's nothing really trick.

I am afraid there's no real short cut on this except for RTFM.

In the meantime I will try to find some threads for you and post them on here for you.

happy reading.

Just did the brakes on my 1200 gs

Have to say tbh its easy. Just read the book watch the youtube stuff and think. Dont bleed the 'normal way' or it will all go wrong.

If any one out there has a range rover classic with abs then they will reconise the system its the same the components are just smaller.

You definatly don't not need a computer and definatly do not need the main dealer. The whole job including strip down and replacing a broken brake line took just over an hour and a half.

However as always if your not sure or are'nt reasonably compitant with a spanner than bite the bullet and take to the dealer.
