New-Style Average speed cameras are to be placed into 20mph residential zones in the New Year, in a bid to enforce new inner city limits.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1:place>Camden</st1:place></st1:City>, Southwark and <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Waltham</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>Forest</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> will be among eight London Boroughs to pioneer the new system, which will be linked wirelessly via transmitters.<o:p></o:p> <st1:City><st1:place>Portsmouth</st1:place></st1:City> became the first <st1:country-region><st1:place>UK</st1:place></st1:country-region> town to introduce a blanket 20mph limit on all residential roads; <st1:City><st1:place>Norwich</st1:place></st1:City> and <st1:City><st1:place>York</st1:place></st1:City> are now also set to follow suit.<o:p></o:p> The new Specs3 system can communicate wirelessly and will be able to keep tabs on your average speed in up to a 15-mile radius.<o:p></o:p> The Conservative Party said they would scrap Labour's road camera regime if they win the next election.<o:p></o:p> Today's news must make Gordon Brown feel like chucking the towel in.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>

Complete bs from a govt that has no idea how to improve road safety, but wants to be seen to be doing something. There are certainly areas where 20mph is a sensible max, but there are also plenty that aren't. A blanket 20mph is ridiculous, I'll bet they have to massage figures to demonstrate any safety improvements. Tho the revenue gained should at least cover their costs.

I suppose it depends on what they mean by residential zones & not all areas within a 15 mile radius are residential zones - although in & around London & big sprawling cities I suppose they could get away with it - but elsewhere?.....doubt it! I mean for example - in & around Holmfirth - most of the residential 'zones' are 'ickle snickety lanes where you can't get more than 10 mph even if you tried!!! But then within a 15 mile radius we've got the open moors with national speed limits. But I would agree that within housing 'estates' then 20 mph limit could be a good thing - maybe get the kids out playing instead of sitting on their arses playing computer games?

So how is that going to apply to a bike?????? All the average speed cameras i've seen rely on recocnising the front number plate? or would they need to face the other way to get the rear, So, if our residential road are going to be covered with speed cameras how long before they go one step forward and all roads are covered by cctv. We can already be tracked by moble phones, what next ????

New-Style Average speed cameras are to be placed into 20mph residential zones .... Forgive me my blondeness but what is the 'average' speed and how can we have an average speed if the speed is set at 20?

They record a time between points, they know the distance, so work out an mph from that. If the result is more than 20, you're nicked. As Paul said, how long before it's rolled out nationwide ? I believe they're already working on scameras that will take pics of rear plates.

The government needs cash, the environmentalist want to ban fossil fuels, and because motorist don't respect pedestrians safety campaigners want to slow us down but the government doesn't want to ban a good income they give us more legislation to deal with.

This country is becoming a control state and getting worse by the hour.....ID cards, Average speed cameras, Speed limiters, it's this bunch of clowns that stop a regular dredging of that river in Cockermouth and look what happened there.

Teach common sense to drivers or put more police on the beat to deter the boy racer but not cameras.

For those of you who want the really bad news have a look at the following link. It is the official sales blurb from the manufacturer. Specs 3 is designed to capture bikes and will still get you if you change lanes. speedcheck.co.uk/SPECS3_overview.pdf

I reckon kerbside railings and a raised pedestrian crossing would be a better solution. Wouldn't provide an income for the 'government' though, would it... damn!
