To resolve the performance issues, there will be a number of changes over the next week.
Today we've just purchased a new web server which I will be migrating everything over to this weekend.
At the beginning of next week, we will also be moving to a new database server.
Unfortunately this means the site will be down at times, but please be patient with us and you'll soon have (hopefully) a rapid website to use.
I expect approx. 24 hours of total downtime, spread over 3 or 4 occassions.
Kind Regards,
~Matt
woo hoo!! I am doing the same today matt building my server at home. mine is for no apperent reason except i have nothing better to do tonight, plus the amount og heat this thing will pump out will keep the house warm lol.
XKLYBR - No lol
If you get the tower servers they are designed to sit in an office. you might as well get the heat out of then in the winter got you lol. move the like into the house. win win
put a server in each room of the house - lol, really economical.
God help them in summer here, gets really hot. Good job my office is fitted with extractor fans :-)
XKLYBR - I'll do it whilst you're offline lol
If all goes to plan, i should be able to move things really quickly. The only problem is I will have to stop additions/updates/changes to the site whilst I move everything.

wot your web servers running on mat? Linux or windows?.
I'm just about to set my main PC up as a dual boot. Not sre which flavour of linux i'm gonna use yet. there's still a few free builds out there.
whilst you`re at it Matt pls can you fill in Teddy`s profile def the best lookin geezer on the site and i would send him a wink if i knew where to direct it to!
Yer Linux is free because it is opensource matt lol. i have tried a few flavours of linux and found that umbuntu is the better one. They produce a workstation and a server version.
I need to spend more time on Linux as i do not want to move onto Vista.
Vista is also a pain in the arse. BUT - if you spend a day tweaking it, disabling stuff, etc... then it's brilliant! I used to hate it, but now i swear by it. Takes a lot of messing about to get perfect though.
Well i'm using the new server now, accessing the same BM database.... and it seems the problem must be with the DB server. Because right now, even on the new server, it's still slow.
And I'm the only one using the new server, so the problem is definitely with the DB server.
Time to get the DB moved to another server now I think.

Windows is a pain matt not Linux. Its faster than windows, more secure than windows. uses a better file structure. Which is why most pc games servers run on linux and most of the biggest web sites are running on Linux. No Overhead. Oh and it's cheaper. not necessarily free. And i thought it was just a large hop count that was slowing the site down.
no the large hop has another effect... each file (image, icon, button, etc) that gets requested takes 200ms or so to START downloading.
The main issue is that the database server is used by other people, and some of them are using too many resources. Our DB needs its own server really. I might try and run the DB services on the new Web server, gonna do some testing now.
and TC - i do this stuff with my eyes closed, backwards. If theres anything I do well, it's configuring web servers and databases. I do this stuff all day every day at work
:-)
I would believe you Matt, if it wasn't for the fact that you STILL can't get my wink facility to work.... *cough*
As Julie says, your Teddy gets more winks than me!
Yeah... yeah... there's definitely sumfing wrong with it... I only seem to get sympathy winks or winks by mistake....
(and no... FYI I am NOT 'getting any'.... )
