this is the problem you see - how do you stop people from uploading videos of 500mb in size, uncompressed format? Try explaining to your average biker that 1/2 GB files are too big... errrr what?
It's hard enough limiting the size of picture files.
And how do you go about compressing them on the server, then streaming successfully to client machines?
The only solution - write some kind of program that people install on their PCs to compress/upload photos.... but this isn't my field I'm afraid.
but would they? Or would they just eat up all the bandwidth pushing large movie files in different formats?
Also - I'd need to get some server side scripting able to read movies etc.
Think I might need to get a degree in bloody digital movie manipulation for this one lol
I know what you mean mate! I have a degree in media combined studies ,which included movie making!
Sadly digital was in its infancy back in 2000 when I graduated and most of my knowledge has been aquired through "personal" research.
It changes constantly, even the "industry" cant always agree on "formats" !
Only in the last 3 /4 years has there been a significant increase in digital production at professional level. Basically since Kodack announced their abandonment of "wet film".
I hope you persevere with this topic, it is the way to go and will prove very popular eventually but pioneers often face obstacles.
Good luck, I''ll help if I can.
Em
ok i've been researching and I know I can easily allow the uploading and playback of movies.
The only problem I have it A) Checking the files uploaded are of a suitable format (Experience tells me that people just rename the extension to upload, so you need a way of reading the file headers, and; B) Compressing videos on the server automatically after upload (So people don't get jumpy movies when streaming large files)
If you can help with a solution that would be great.
well DHL have delivered my massive UPS today which came on a pallet! Unfortuantely the idiots who delivered it have ruined the wooden floor in my house (Not to mention the concrete floor outside too!).
