so forgot to say, calendar news were filming at squires when we were there last night, dont know what it was all about but the program is on now and report will be broadcast tonight ! how exciting is that
it was the county coroner going on a campaign trying to get across the message about Bikes & accidents & riding safely & about how it's more likely to be born again bikers getting killed.
its people like me who had bikes as teenagers then had 20-30 yrs off and now got the dosh for a decent bike but not the skills to handle it.
so the moral is keep training, and when youve done that then do some more, dont spend your money on the fancy exhaust and tiny indicators spend it on something that might save your life and your family a lot of heartache in fact factor it into your budget and dont spend every penny on the best bike you can get!

Good advice that Julie seeing as i've just bought the fancy pipe and i'm not a great rider! She's deffo right about the returning biker thing tho. I saw some stats other week showing over 70% of fatals are peeps in their forties coming off in bends! I did buy an indicator buzzer tho cos i'm a plonker for leaving my indicators on and I didn't want anyone pulling out on me with my nipper on the back, best 10 quid i've ever spent as i've never left em on since
and.... for those local enough to Squires the York Advanced Bikers meet on a Saturday morning to take all us bikers who have passed their test but still feel the need to learn more and gain more practical experience. There is a fee, but thats mainly for membership to IAM and the advanced test fee. (You don't have to take the test if you don't want) The time the guys and girls give on a Saturday is free. For a good 3 hours riding and plenty of good advice, the cost is a cuppa for the volunteers who give up their time. Can recommend it. But be prepared to unlearn some stuff you had to do to pass your test !!
also a high percentage of accidents happen when the rider at the back is trying to ride way beyong his capabilities, and i agree rk, re bends, thats why i always say re bends slow in fast out, you really cant go wrong
There was a very good report in Surveyor magazine a couple of months about this.
Apparently there has been a very large increase in the number of born again bikers and newbies in their forties and on. Surveyor puts a lot of this down to the credit crunch, saying that these people who would normally be buying their new bmw convertible toy are deciding to save money and buy a big bike instead.
These are people who as Julie has said are returning to biking and those that are taking advantage of the DAS test.
Another reason according to Surveyor was the change in the test itself which encouraged many people to get their test passed before it changed.
It has been regularly said over the years that if you have a couple of hundred squid to spend on performance aids for your motorbike, you'd get far more return if you were to spend that money on performance aids for you instead! A day or two with a good advanced instructor will make you a quicker and yet safer rider.
Cheers mate. As many know, I've had a lot of training, however this was a long time ago and as I've found even non-born again bikers pick up bad habits.
As such I am planning on taking advantage of the bikesafe scheme and see if I can get some brush up tips with a copper.
Hopefully he/she won't nick me! If they're anything like the police I trained with, they'll be telling me off for going too slow rather than too fast lol!
just as long as they dont look what you keep in that top box lol, i think leicestershire police do a similar thing, i am thinking of looking into it too
