Apostrophe peculiarities?

I've noticed on some posts that apostrophes are turning into quotation marks.

Initially I assumed it was silly people not knowing the difference between " and ' until I noticed it happening with a few of my own posts.

I'm a bit of a stickler for the old apostrophe. I have one in my surname and have been known to send ranting emails to Web Masters who won't allow me to use an "illegal" character in my name! GGggrrrrr! I have also been known on the odd occasion to correct menus and blackboards in restaurants... hell, I'd go around editing everything with gay abandon if I didn't think I'd be likely to get a bunch of market traders and shopkeepers form a lynch mob against me!

The game developers of a certain application on a certain website will give in eventually I'm sure... I've been bombarding them with complaints for over a month now - forcing me to lose my beloved apostrophe! How very dare they?!

So I KNOW for a fact that it's not my typing that's at fault What's causing it? Fix it please Mr Matt or I'll be forced to up my meds. Alternatively, I could just get out more... *ahem*

I'm considering developing a fold-up soap box Ian... It'd be dead handy for random ranting sessions AND it'd be incredibly useful for me to clamber onto the back of big bikes.

A toofer deal methinks

I reported it to Matt and he said it was probably my computer which could be right but as I''ve noticed it happening to other''s posts it must be a B M glitch yea? I''ll swap ya summat for the soap box, how about some shower gel?

Quotation marks can be single or double. Still, the single is not an apostrophe. (goes off to check old grammar books)

Yeah yeah yeah... Somebody had to say that... But I can't remember what the correct terminology is for a "double" quotation mark, so I made an executive decision

WB... apostrophes are extremely dangerous characters for a website designer to allow! By adding an apostrophe and some very small code, a hacker could delete an entire website without even accessing the server!!! I thought this issue must be related to Kwak's keyboard setting or something because I've not seen it on other posts and I can't reproduce the error. If I'm gonna figure this out, I need you to help find the common denominator. When does it go wrong and when doesn't it?

test '''' test '''' test. Seems fine. Is it when you copy/paste from somewhere? Why would all my posts be fine and yours not? It''''s the same code for me as it is for everyone else.

Now why couldn''t someone have said that to me before?

Simple explanation - makes complete sense! Instead I get stupid responses from stupid people saying it''s unnecessary to use apostrophes or saying they disallow all characters that aren''t letters/numbers.

It''s not unnecessary, it''s part of my name. It always has been. You might as well tell me to lose the i in my first name as there are obviously WAY too many vowels for a 2 syllable word... Then again, many folk already call me Louse anyway

Aha!

I've just discovered a potential cause... I edited the above post because I'd forgotten to put the part of your post I quoted into italics Matt.

Another cause I'm wondering is this:

Does it affect the apostrophe when I change the font size?

Nope it doesn't!

I thought that might be what caused it, as the post it happened on for me before was one where I'd included some smaller lettering... but perhaps it's only in posts that we subsequently edit?

& you can shut up & all An! Seeing as I've decided to ban the letter i from everyone's names
