so shiny new lap top (you all remember teenage trauma and vandalism) is throwing a wobbly.. every time it updates itself, every day just about i cant get back onto the internet and have to use system restore to get access.is there a way to stop the updates, will stopping updates cause other probs. also tried to install anti virus avg but it blocked internet access, which is best anti virus to use with vista basic, have no antivirus at the mo. if anyone can shed any light in simple terms id be very grateful .
you need to go into the security centre and turn of automatic updates. As for anti virus I would recommend ESET NOD32. it is slightly more expensive than Norton but it is far better. give me a call on Monday and I can get you a price. It is the Anti-virus that we install in work on all out business clients and we us it ourselves so we practise what we preach.
Change auto-update preferences, dont disable completely! They're there for a reason. You should set them to NOT download/install automatically, but rather let you choose what you want. When you choose your updates, you should NOT allow it to update your drivers (Such as wireless/network drivers).
Antivirus - McAfee enterprise works perfectly on my vista laptop and PC. Small, compact, fast, secure... it's good.
thanks for all the advice so far, daughter no 1 says i need a different browser cos probs not resolved so far ,she recommends firefox .What do you all reckon?
not at all - you don't need to change your browser (IE works best with BM, and in fact some features on BM wont work with firefox!).
If your internet is dead, it doesn't matter what browser you use.
Just turn off automatic updates and see how you get on for a few days - it's in Control Panel
how do you get it free from hsbc? is it just for online customers? update is daughter says i need a different operating system? have not the 1st clue of what she is on about!
For what you do with a computer you might be better istalling LINUX
Ur daughter will know what I'm on about
If ur probs not resolved by now, get in touch.
