Power giant Eon and the Highways Agency have agreed a date and time to demolish <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on">Sheffield</st1:place>'s iconic Tinsley cooling towers.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> The huge structures will be flattened using explosives at around 3am on Sunday August 24. The date, and time, has been chosen to coincide with the bank holiday weekend because the M1 will have to be closed in case anything goes wrong, Eon said the 3am time slot had been chosen in a bid to "minimise disruption" to locals and road users.Tinsley's cooling towers, which were at one time part of the Blackburn Meadows power station which closed down in the 1970s , stand alongside the Tinsley Viaduct, which carries the M1 motorway. They were left standing when the rest of plant was dismantled because of their close proximity to the M1.Earlier this year the power firm E.ON, which owns the towers, was given planning permission to develop a biomass power station at Blackburn Meadows, which it said would produce enough renewable energy to serve the needs of around 40,000 homes.A viewing platform is planned at the Meadowhall Shopping Centre, which is on the opposite side of the motorway.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> The M1 will be closed between junctions 32 and 35 from midnight on Saturday evening and for most of Bank Holiday Sunday. The A631 Tinsley viaduct lower deck between the Tinsley and Meadowhall roundabouts will also be closed.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>

My family and me moved away from Yorkshire in 1966 and I remember the towers from before we left as my grandma used to live in Sheffield.

They using them new-fangled silent explosives then? With great big fluffy cushions spread over the ground for a quiet landing? ;o)

ROFLMHO @ Wannabe's comments I was thinking, that if I lived in close proxim...near by...and IF I was dating, how awesome it would be to have a bit of smooching coincide with the demolition, that would bring a whole new meaning to 'make the earth move'.

I went past those last night and I will be for the next two nights. Usually about 3am! I will miss them. It means ahour and a half to home! LOL Now I'll have to use boring old Meadowhalls as a beacon instead.

Remember em well, from the few months I spent on a college course in Sheffield back in the 70s. Just as I'd got the hang of finding my way round Sheffield it was time to come home - but the towers were a landmark you could always rely on.
