Residents have been praised for their amazing response after they potentially saved the life of a badly injured motorcyclist trapped under a car.
The 27-year-old was left with serious chest and arm injuries when the Ford Fiesta came to rest on top of him in Bournemouth. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
He was involved in a collision with the car at around 5.20pm on Saturday on Charminster Road, outside Tesco near the junction with Stewart Road.
Stephen Tingle, general manager of nearby Breeze Bar, said: “The response from the community was amazing. Within 20 seconds there must have been 30 people lifting the car. The rider was under the front axle. He was conscious but he looked to be in a bad way. Luckily there was a doctor going into Tesco and she took control.”
The car was driven by a 54 year old woman from Bournemouth. Her vehicle came to rest by the pavement outside Charminster dry cleaners.
The owner of Southern Fried Chicken was one of the people from the takeaways and convenience stores who ran to help. He did not wish to be named, but said: “There were about 20-30 of us and some people said ‘don’t touch him’ but most of us said ‘we need to lift it’.
“Because of the way the car was over him I didn’t think he would have a chance if we didn’t. We went ‘1,2,3,4, lift!’ I was concentrating all my power on the car. “All the neighbours showed a good heart. I think in a way we saved his life.”
Mido, from XYZ Hair Studio a few yards away, said: “I saw the car was on top of his chest.
“People were helping and they lifted the car off him. The man was making a painful noise but he didn’t talk too much.”
The bike rider, who is from Bournemouth, was taken to Poole hospital and police described his condition as serious but stable.
